Elysian Prairie is an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization (EIN: 37-2168075) dedicated exclusively to native prairie restoration and conservation education in the Loess Hills of Iowa. We protect, restore, and document the rare native prairie landscape near Castana, Iowa — one acre at a time.

We are located near Castana, Iowa in the Loess Hills — approximately 45 minutes southeast of Sioux City and about 1 hour 15 minutes northeast of Omaha, Nebraska. Exact directions and a map will be provided with your booking or event confirmation.

Elysian Prairie was founded by Carolyn and Russ Uhl, who live on and steward the land. They bring decades of experience in conservation, land management, and community building to every aspect of the restoration work.

Yes! Conservation and restoration work happens year-round. Each season brings unique opportunities — seed planting in spring, trail work in summer, controlled burns in fall, and planning in winter. Volunteer opportunities are available throughout the year.

The best way to reach us is through our Contact page. You can also reach us by email at hello@elysianprairie.org. We typically respond within one business day.

Cell service on the property is limited — part of the beauty of being out here. We do offer Wi-Fi at the main gathering area, but we encourage guests to embrace the opportunity to unplug. The Loess Hills have a way of reminding you what you've been missing.

Some areas of the property involve uneven terrain typical of the Loess Hills landscape. Please contact us before visiting so we can discuss which areas and activities are the best fit for your needs and do our best to make your visit comfortable.
